Fire Department opens recruitment – Applications start March 1

The City of Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) is launching its 2026 firefighter recruitment process, offering residents the chance to serve their community and join one of Michigan’s most respected and accredited fire departments. Applications for firefighter positions will open March 1 and close May 30. GRFD will also accept applications for Fire Cadet positions.

City Manager Washington appoints interim chief of police

City Manager Mark Washington announced today that Joseph “Joe” Trigg will serve as interim chief of police for the Grand Rapids Police Department, effective March 2. Trigg is a 25-year veteran of the department and currently serves as deputy chief of police for field operations. He will step into the role following the departure of Chief Eric Winstrom, who announced his resignation last week.
